International News Affairs

  • Today (2nd June) is International Sex Workers Rights Day.
    • This day honours sex workers and recognises their often exploited working conditions.
  • In a move honouring his campaign promise,US President Donald Trump today pulled the country out of the Paris climate agreement.
    • The US would join Syria and Nicaragua as the world’s only non-participants in the 195-nation accord which is the first legally binding global deal to fight climate change.
  • The US has granted emergency approval for a new questionnaire asking US visa applicants social media handles of the last five years and biographical information of the last 15 years.
    • Officials can request prior passport numbers, addresses and employment history.
    • While the questions are voluntary, failure to provide the information may delay or prevent the processing of visa applications.
  • PM Narendra Modi will arrive  Paris, France tonight.
    • There he will hold talks with French President Emmanuel Macron tomorrow.
  • The SCO’s summit is going to be held in Astana, Kazakhstan from 8th and 9th June 2017.
    • This summit will complete the admission proceduresfor India and Pakistan’s admission to the China-backed Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).

MOUs & Agreements

  • India and Russia today signed 5 MOUs. They are :
    • Agreement between the Federal Service for Intellectual Property (Rospatent) and the Council of India on Scientific and Industrial Research to provide access to Rospatent experts to the Indian Digital Library of Traditional Knowledge (TKDL).
    • An agreement for the construction of the third stage of the Kudankulam NPP (KK5 & KK6) along with the Credit Protocol been signed between NPCIL and ROSATOM.
    • An agreement on cultural exchanges for a period of two years (2017-2019).
    • Contract between JSC (Russian Railways) and the Ministry of Railways on the preparation of the justification for the implementation of the high-speed service at the Nagpur-Secunderabad section.
    • Memorandum of cooperation between ALROSA Joint Stock Company and the Council for the Promotion of the Export of Precious Stones and Jewellery of India.

National News Affairs

  • The state of Telangana is celebrating the 3rd anniversary of its foundation.
    • Telangana is 29th state of India, which came into being on June 2nd 2014, after Andhra Pradesh was split into two states —Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

      • Chief Minister : K Chandrasekhar Rao
    • The Haryana government has changed the name of Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) to Haryana Shahari Vikas Pradhikaran (HSVP).
      • The state’s Health Minister Anil Vij said HUDA was often misunderstood as it rhymed with the name of former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda.
    • From July, Odisha will commission the ambitious Early Warning Dissemination System (EWDS)to warn the vast population residing along its 480 km-long coast in the event of the occurrence of natural disasters like a tsunami or a cyclone.
      • Note : Andhra Pradesh is also reportedly developing such system to alert the people in case of natural calamities.

Awards & Honours

  • Indian-origin student Ananya Vinay today won the 90th Scripps National Spelling Bee contest, held annually in the United States of America.
    • She spelled French word ‘Marocain’, a dress fabric made of silk or wool, to win the contest.
  • Indian film Ralang Road has been chosen to compete for the top prize at the 52nd Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in the Czech Republic this year.
    • The film has been nominated for the Crystal Globe Award along with eleven other films.

Banking, Business & Economic Affairs

  • China has overtaken India to become the World’s Fastest Growing Economy after India reported slow economic growth for the fourth consecutive quarter.
    • In the last quarter of the 2016-17 fiscal, India had a 6.1% growth, as against China which recorded a growth rate of 6.9% during the period.
    • The GDP growth for the year also fell from 8% to 7.1%.
  • Bharti Airtel has got approvals from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) for the proposed scheme of merger with Telenor (India) Communications Private Ltd.
    • Bharti Airtel now has filed the joint company application before the New Delhi Bench of the National Company Law Tribunal for approval.

Science & Technology

  • The land version of the short range surface–to–surface ballistic missile Prithvi-II was successfully test-fired from a defence base off Odisha coast.
    • The test was conducted by the Strategic Forces Command (SFC) of the Indian Army with logistics support from DRDO.
  • Social media giant Facebook is developing a new app called ‘Talk‘ for teenagers that would come with parent-centric features.
    • With the new app, parents would be able to see and filter the people to whom their children are talking to.

Books & Authors

  • A new Middle-earth love story by JRR Tolkien (‘Lord of the Rings’ author)has been published 100 years after being written.
    • Beren and Lúthien‘ has been referred to as a “personal story” written after Tolkien returned from World War One’s Battle of the Somme.

Current Sports Affairs

  • The West Indies cricket team has been officially renamed as ‘WINDIES‘ while the West Indies Cricket Board has rebranded itself as ‘Cricket West Indies’ on its 90th anniversary.
    • The new name will apply to all teams representing the Board and will be used on all team playing shirts.
  • Manika Batra and Mouma Das become 1st Indian pair to reach quarterfinals of the World Table Tennis Championships in Dusseldorf.
